A lot of curiosity revolves around the world of quads, which the enthusiast or aspiring quad rider cannot fail to know. The most intriguing details concern the origins of its name, how it was born and the development it has experienced over the years, up to the present day. The common thread remains the same: the search for emotions and adventure that the quad offers thanks to its performance.

The quad is a means of transportation developed to be perfect for driving on the most challenging terrains. It is immediately associated with off-road in a broader sense. Its origins and history are very interesting. Let's start with its name. Initially they were called All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), vehicles for all terrains. This is the English acronym, which perfectly summarizes one of the main characteristics of the quad. In Italy, it was instead renamed "quad," as a contraction of the word QUADricycle. The journey continues in the following paragraphs, dedicated to the curiosities of this powerful and high-performing vehicle.

ATV and QUAD: are they the same thing?

Quads, in their famous four-wheel version, fall into the broader category of All Terrain Vehicles. The current quads can be defined as a sort of ancestors of ATVs. The American National Standards Institute itself defines vehicles with the following characteristics as All Terrain Vehicles:

  • low-pressure tires, a unique feature for a motor vehicle;
  • wide seat for the rider;
  • handlebars for steering control.

A distinction based on the number of wheels highlights the existence of two main categories. On one side, there are the All Terrain Vehicles (ATV), motorized vehicles with 4 wheels, including quads in their 4-wheel version but not only. Think about buggies: lightweight quadricycles with a modified engine set on an open frame, ideal for moving on sand dunes or beaches. We cannot fail to mention those huge models that can have up to eight wheels, used as amphibious vehicles capable of operating in extreme situations. On the other side, there are the so-called All Terrain Cycles (ATC), which rely on three wheels, such as the trike, for off-road use, bear the Honda signature.

ATVs were originally designed to allow the transportation of people and goods on difficult and rugged paths. Quads then lose their most extreme features, such as amphibious ones, but gain points in terms of lightness and maneuverability on the terrain.

QUAD  and ATV, the origins

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) were first built in Japan to meet the need to move on the most difficult terrains. The idea was developed by a factory located in an isolated and rugged area of the country, to support its workers. During spring thaw and rainy season it became impossible to move with traditional means of transport and reach the workplace. This is how the first ATVs are born, initially with 3 wheels, to allow employees, and not only, to move in the most inaccessible areas.

The quad arrives in the early 60s in Canada, where some vehicles dedicated to golf courses are modified to tackle more difficult and muddy terrains, especially during rainy periods. All Terrain Vehicles start gaining popularity, even in the West. These vehicles are known for their agility, compactness, and resistance.

The real explosion comes in the 70s, when quads land for the first time in the United States. Here their use expands. The focus is not only on transportation needs but also on the fun and adventurous aspect that ATVs offer to bikers. Quads in the USA experience an unprecedented phase of expansion, not only from a qualitative perspective but also commercially. New models, more powerful and practical, begin to be created and developed. The goal is to make the vehicle as versatile as possible, suitable for both work purposes, such as agriculture, and recreational activities.

Quads arrived in Europe only in the ’90s, where their charm gradually took hold. On one hand, sporty and recreational characteristics prevail, and on the other hand, motorcycle potentialities. Italy, Greece, and Spain have approached quads in recent years, where they are mainly used in holiday areas, especially on the islands. The interest remains very strong in the sporting field.

The history of quads is based precisely on the willingness to meet the rider's needs, where the spirit of adventure and the search for emotions never fail. The development of quads first responds to work-related travel needs. It then aims to offer more and more thrills and adventures to quad riders, on rough and challenging terrains, with increasingly attractive designs and faster engines.

Quad, the current market

The design and production of quads remains strong and can be divided into three groups:

  1. Sport quads: rely solely on rear wheel drive and use a chain transmission. They are ideal for off-road terrain and the manual gearbox makes it even more exciting and fun to drive;
  2. Utility quads, defined as Utility: their task is to meet a specific need, some can even be approved for agricultural use. They have 4-wheel drive, with both high and low gears. A driveshaft transmission is preferred because it requires less maintenance;
  3. Hybrid quads, the so-called Sport-Utility: these are utility vehicles with sport-inspired performance. They have 4-wheel drive and the transmission can be driveshaft or chain.

Although the playful and sporty aspect is particularly highlighted, most of the production concerns Utility and Sport-Utility ranges. In this historical overview, it is noted how the search for adventure and adrenaline always prevails, thanks to the flexibility provided by the ATV, which is able to adapt to the biker's needs in that specific context.
